Resurrecting A Trusty Meme To Make A Point

On Thursday, May 3, the Peacuck Network (NBC) made a colossal error in its reporting.

Tom Winter, whose bio on Twitter states he is an NBC “investigations reporter” focusing on police, courts, corruption, cyber security and counterterrorism, reported at 12:59 PM the wiretapping of President Trump’s longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen.

The supposed “bombshell” sent the cockroaches at other cable news networks into overdrive repeating the same lie.

NBC attributed its original story to two anonymous sources with knowledge of the legal proceedings against Cohen. Winter said the sources have a track record of providing reliable information.

When three unidentified senior US officials disputed the story, saying the phones were monitored by a pen register which keeps a log of phone numbers on both ends of the conversation but does not hear the audio, NBC scurried to issue a correction online at 5:27 PM followed by an on-air correction with “Sleepy Eyes” Chuck Todd on MSNBC’s “Meet the Press Daily”.

It was smart not to let disgraced liar, Brian Williams, anywhere near the “correction” given his propensity for adroit lies such as being shot down by RPG fire in Iraq, meeting Pope John Paul, being embedded with Navy Seal Team 6, being in Berlin on the day the wall came down and his encounters of suicide, floating bodies, armed gangs and dysentery during Hurricane Katrina.

With disgraced NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams making his way to MSNBC after an apology tour in which he laughably confessed he didn’t lie his ego did, I think this fella will boost the ratings for the flailing cable news channel and there will never be any cause for concern that Williams’ soaring fantasies will reemerge.

Why It's a Mistake to Call What Brian Williams Did a "Mistake"

I keep running across people who call what Brian Williams did a "mistake", because obviously, we can forgive anyone for making a mistake. I mean, everybody makes mistakes, right? Except that Williams didn't "mistakenly" describe a death defying helicopter ride he never took. He lied about it. Repeatedly. For over a decade.

I've taken many flights in commercial aircraft, and though I can't remember the details of most of them, one flight I do. The plane I was on got hit by lightning in mid air. It was like being inside a big, old fashioned flashbulb. A flash and a pop and then a little retina afterimage before things when back to normal.

The plane wasn't seriously damaged, but I believe it affected the avionics. The plane seemed to yaw a bit more than usual, so combined with some wind shear at our destination airport, we were diverted to a safer landing spot.

Now I don't remember reading about it and placing myself in the plane, I don't remember someone telling me about it and it was such a nifty story I started telling it as if I was there, I was there. It was unusual enough that though I'd have to look up which airport was my original destination and which airport we were diverted to (along with a long party bus trip to our original destination), but I remember being in that aircraft when it was hit.

If I suddenly changed that story to taking damage from an air to air missile, that would not be a "mistake", it would be a lie. You can play semantic games and say it would be a 'mistake' for me to lie, but the mistake is secondary. Dishonesty is the primary thing. It goes to character. The fact is that Williams showed this appalling lack of character for over a decade, just because he could get away with it.

I may make a mistake in my checkbook, but it's a one time thing. I might make a different mistake, but I won't repeat the same mistake time and time again, keep the same erroneous balance year after year. I'll correct it with my next statement and try awfully hard not to repeat it. And then forget about it. Mistakes are momentary lapses in judgement, not a lifestyle.

Brian Williams is the Baron von Munchausen of the Nightly News. His wounds are largely self inflicted. Feel sorry for him or not. BW will be an obscure question on trivial Pursuit before he ever regains a tenth of the credibility he's lost.

Brian Williams: The Most Terrific Liar You Ever Saw

Suffering from delusions of grandeur, NBC news anchor Brian Williams has been caught in a lie.  Check that.  A couple of lies.

Fancying himself a kind of Col. Jessup from A Few Good Men, Williams willfully lied to portray his counterfeit bravery.  The claim that his helicopter was hit by RPG and AK-47 fire in Iraq has crumbled and now he is assiduously attempting to salvage his career.

For over 10 years Williams has repeated his half-truth of heroic survival and even told it again as recently as last Friday night, during a Rangers game when NBC did a special segment about one of the soldiers who protected him in Iraq.

He was busted when Stars & Stripes, a military newspaper, asked the helicopter crew members about that fateful day and they had a different story to tell: the truth.

He lies as easily as his hero Law Professor/Community Organizer president and rivals his smugness.

Someone should remind Williams his lies are tantamount to stolen valor.
