Iowans treasure the
national attention that shines on them every four years when presidential
candidates descend on their state.
Die-hard Democrat
activists are getting
restless because the massive field isn’t shrinking fast enough. If Democrats don't start to figure things out
soon, they could give President Trump the upper hand.
“You’ve got people
focused on vacation and in Iowa they’re going to the State Fair. And I
guarantee you they’re not going because of the Soapbox,” said former Obama
Democratic strategist Doug Herman.
Former Alaska governor
Mike Gravel dropped out of the race after just four months. Richard Ojeda, ex-State senator from West
Virginia, ditched his campaign after a scant two months. And then there’s the smarmy pipsqueak, Eric “Nuke
‘Em” Swalwell, who was drummed out after two flailing months.
Not only is the State
Fair an opportunity to build name recognition, but it also serves as an
informal poll. Anyone who looks over 18
can go to a tent hosted by a local television affiliate and put a kernel of
corn in a mason jar in front of the picture of their candidate of choice. In
2016, the poll predicted that Trump would win by 56%. That November, he won the
state by 51%.
According to a
published report
from The Washington Times, President Trump is “showing his strength in the
informal survey of fairgoers.” President
Trump had received support from 97% of Republicans while gaffemeister Joe Biden
pulled in 33% of the votes cast.
Struggling in the corn
kernel poll are Alfred E. Neuman at 14%, Pocahontas at 12%, “Crooked Cop”
Harris at 11% and the guy who combs his hair with a balloon rounds out the
field at a measly 5%.
The other 16 candidates
who are scraping the bottom of the barrel don’t have the good sense to abandon
their White House bids and that’s a yuuuuge problem for a party desperate to
oust President Trump.
