Alabama Crimson Tide Vs Arkansas Razorbacks

No other division in college football is as tough as the Southeastern Conference.

Today at Donald W. Reynolds Stadium in Fayetteville, Arkansas the Hogs and Head Coach Bret Bielema want nothing more than to knock the Alabama Crimson Tide from their No.1 perch in the national rankings and prove they belong in the upper echelon of the SEC.  If they win it would be the biggest win of Bielema’s career at Arkansas.

This will be the fifth time Alabama has been ranked #1 when facing Arkansas. Alabama has a 4-0 record against the Hogs when ranked #1.
2010 #1 Alabama 24 #10 Arkansas 20
2011 #3 Alabama 38 #14 Arkansas 14
2012 #1 Alabama 52 Arkansas 0
2013 #1 Alabama 52 Arkansas 0
2014 #7 Alabama 14 Arkansas 13
2015 #8 Alabama 27 Arkansas 14

Arkansas will try to snap a nine-game losing streak against Alabama.

Alabama has been playing Arkansas on an annual basis since Arkansas joined the SEC back in 1992.  Before joining the conference, Arkansas and Alabama had only met twice on the gridiron, both times in the Sugar Bowl back in 1961 and 1979. They have met 26 times total with Alabama owning a 19-7 record against the Razorbacks.

The first three times Alabama faced off against Arkansas resulted in 3 national championships in 1961, 1979 and 1992.
I don’t want to get too cocky and start slathering barbecue sauce on those porkers, but the lowly Hogs will only manage to keep the game close for while.  The Bama offense is deep and the defense has given up a scant 22 points in four games.  This will prove to be too much for the Razorbacks to overcome.  It’ll brutal—like a lion playing with its food.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!

And since no football post would be complete with some gorgeous cheerleaders and their pom-poms, please feast your eyes upon the famed Crimsonettes.

Game time is 7:00 PM and will air on ESPN.

Alabama Crimson Tide (No.1) Vs Ole Miss Rebels (No. 19)

Order shall be restored today.  Count on it.  Alabama takes the field at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium against the Ole Miss Rebels in what amounts to a reckoning.

Ole Miss fans will lock arms before kickoff and sway to the public address system blasting Led Zeppelin’s ominous Kashmir as their team runs onto the field.  They believe “locking up the Vaught” intimidates their opponent.

News flash folks.  It ain’t-a-gonna work today.  Not against the boys from Tuscaloosa.  The Tide may have been a little too hyped last year, but this time around they are MOVITATED—perfect fodder for revenge.  No team, and I mean no team, has beaten Bama three straight times in the Saban era.  The Rebs’ streak ends today.

Don’t believe me?  Last week offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin literally got an ass-chewing from Coach Saban when a fumble led to a Western Kentucky touchdown.  That ass-chewing was coach’s way of putting his game face on early for Ole Miss.

Alabama leads the all-time series with Ole Miss, 51-10-2.
ROLL TIDE ROLL!

Alabama Crimson Tide Vs Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

Bama will face the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in their home opener today at 3:30 PM ET.  The game will air on ESPN2.

College football saw seven ranked SEC teams lose in the first week:  Kentucky, Missouri and Vanderbilt in the East and Auburn, LSU, Miss State and Ole Miss in the West.  Those losses represent the most to fall in their openers in AP Top 25 history.

The defending national champions will be challenged by WKU’s new QB Mike White who threw for 517 yards and three TDs in their 46-14 trouncing of Rice last week.

Head coach Jeff Brohm has made the Hilltoppers a team to be reckoned with.  They were 3-2 in their last five games against SEC foes.
The Hilltopper offense will try to establish a run game against Alabama. I’m going out on a limb here, but I think they won’t have much success.  Just ask USC who was destroyed 52-6 by my beloved Tide last week.  I’m looking for a good defensive game and for Bama QB Jalen Hurts to shine once again.  Alabama for THE WIN!

ROLL TIDE ROLL!

Carolina Panthers Vs Denver Broncos Redux

The Carolina Panthers along with their 2015 NFL MVP quarterback Cam Newton will try to redeem themselves tonight at Sports Authority Field in Denver after their humiliating loss to Denver 24-10 in Super Bowl 50.  The game will air on NBC at 8:30 PM ET.

Newton was blitzed 25 times in his Super Bowl appearance.  Only Jim Kelly faced more blitzes.  He also set a record for the worst completion percentage in a Super Bowl.

Remember when he decided not to dive for the ball on a pivotal play in the biggest game of his life?  Compound the above stats, his decision to “tap out” by not going full-speed to recover that fumbled ball, his big baby reactions during the game, pouting up a storm and leaving the post-game press conference and you have to ask yourself if Newton has grown up during the off-season.

"I'm so focused on the lead-up to our game on Thursday. I can't look back," Newton said. "A lot of people are going to make it a rematch, but it's not a rematch.  It's just our next opponent.  They're a great team, we understand that.  We're putting in our bid to be a great team as well.”

Newton has an improved core with wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin returning from injury, somebody who had more than 1,000 receiving yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie back in 2014.  He’ll take pressure off Tedd Ginn Jr. and allow him to win one-on-one matchups more often.  Defensively, the Carolina Panthers lost cornerback Josh Norman but are still going to be a nasty front seven led by All-Pro linebacker Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis.  They will look to give Broncos QB Trevor Siemian fits tonight.

GO PANTHERS!

Carolina Panthers Vs Green Bay Packers

As a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers, today’s game against the Carolina Panthers has me rooting for The Pack. The 6-1 Packers fell from the ranks of the undefeated in last Sunday night’s game against the Denver Broncos.  The 7-0 Panthers eked out a win in OT against the Colts the following night on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

The Packers roll into Bank of America Stadium looking to bounce back and stay atop the NFC Central Division.  The Panthers are looking to stay undefeated.

Kickoff will be at 1:00 PM ET and will air on FOX.

The Packers demolished the Panthers at Lambeau Field last season 38-17.  If Clay Matthews’ ankle is improved after being injured last week, he will pester QB Cam Newton forcing him out of the box.  Granted Newton’s legs have been a factor in each of their games this season, but the Panthers have been fortunate they haven't faced a green and gold behemoth terrorizing them.

The Acme Packing Company is reporting that Matthews is listed as a “limited participant” in today’s game and “optimistic” he will be “close to full strength” in time for the game.

Newton will be under center Ryan Kalil who has been in a walking boot due to an ankle injury.  Andrew Norwell, Dwan Edwards and Mario Anderson are on the IR.

The Packers are a slight favorite to win today according to oddsmakers.  I say the Packers will definitely bounce back with a win this afternoon.

GO PACK GO!

And because no football post would be complete without some pom-poms, please enjoy the beauty of the Panthers’ Top Cats because the Packers don’t have cheerleaders.

Carolina Panthers Vs Indianapolis Colts

The 3-4 Colts come to Bank of America Stadium tonight to face the 6-0 Panthers.  Monday Night Football kicks off is 8:30 PM ET on ESPN.

Of the six college football games I had my eye on last Saturday, only one of my teams emerged victorious.  The Royals took the crown in the 2015 World Series, but then my beloved Green Bay Packers were humiliated by the Broncos last night.  I’m ready to win a damn football game.

Can the Panthers remain undefeated?  I dunno.  The Colts defense has been terrible so far this season while the Panthers defense has been described as one of the stingiest in the NFL.  If Cam Newton continues to mature and can find a way to get the ball to his best receiver, Greg Olsen, they might manage to eke out a victory.  After all, he had impressive performances against the Seahawks and the Eagles.

With the Packers falling to the Broncos, there remain only four teams in the league who are undefeated.  It would be logical to assume the Colts will lose tonight with QB Andrew Luck’s shoulder injury and his poor decision making.  Honestly, the pressure to remain undefeated is building to a crescendo.  Are the Panthers capable to handling it?  Again, I dunno.  The franchise is in uncharted waters.

GO PANTHERS!

Carolina Panthers Vs Philadelphia Eagles

The 5-0 Carolina Panthers hit the big stage tonight.  They face the 3-3 Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football on NBC.
I have consistently criticized QB Cam Newton in every blog post I’ve ever written about the Panthers.  Either I’m tired of doing that or he’s actually beginning to mature.  You know my beef against him:  arrogant, privileged, spoiled and conceited.  He’s still all those things but he’s starting to realize that there are eleven men on the field with him and the game is not the “Cam Newton Show”.
The Panthers are riding high after beating their nemesis Seattle last Sunday.  I even bragged to a blogger buddy of mine that they had softened up the Seahawks for their game against them last Thursday.  Unfortunately, the 49ers couldn’t get out of their own way and wound up losing 20-3.
Ninth all-time sack leader Jared Allen returns to the field after sitting out last week’s game with a pinched nerve.  A.J. Klein and Teddy Williams will also see action since being cleared in the concussion protocol.
Panthers’ fans are amped up.  This is the team’s best start ever since their only Super Bowl appearance in 2003.  Can they go 6-0?

The Eagles will be “spying” on Newton big time trying to keep him boxed in reducing his chances of getting loose to heave the ball downfield to his favorite receiver Greg Olsen.  The Eagles’ defense has 16 takeaways this season, second-most in the league, and they will be gunning for Newton.

The game’s going to be a tough one, but with the game starting at 8:30 PM ET, the tailgating before the game will go on longer and the crowd will be inclined to be loud.  Then there’s home field advantage.  I think the Panthers win by a touchdown.  Dare I say maybe more?

GO PANTHERS!

Alabama Crimson Tide Vs Tennessee Volunteers

This is the storied rivalry that dates back to 1901.  No. 8 Alabama meets unranked Tennessee at home in Bryant-Denny Stadium.  My beloved Bama is a 15-point favorite.  The boys from Rocky Top are looking to break an eight-game losing streak.  The Tide owns the series 51-38-7.
I’ve got my hate on and the Vols faithful are dreaming of the time 20 years ago when a young phenom by the name of Peyton Manning led them to a 41-14 whipping of the Tide and even sang “Rocky Top” with the band.
I’ve gotta say that is one awful song.  “Once I had a girl on Rocky Top.  Half bear, the other half cat.  Wild as a mink, sweet as soda pop.  I still dream about that.”  I guess with all the ‘shine those boys drink a gal that’s half bear, half cat is a pretty good catch in Tennessee.
Yep, the Vols are bragging about whipping Georgia before their bye week, but don’t forget we mauled the Dawgs in the Rain Bowl in a most convincing manner.
My boys are champing at the bit to continue the tradition started by Bear Bryant of lighting up a cigar in the locker room after they obliterate those orange Cheetos.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!

Carolina Panthers Vs Seattle Seahawks

It’s Week 6 of the NFL’s regular season and there remain five undefeated teams:   the Patriots, Bengals, Broncos, Packers and Panthers.  The Panthers?  Really?

The Panthers’ wins this season have come against the Jaguars, Texans, a Drew Brees-less Saints team and the Buccaneers led by a crab-leg-thievin’ Jameis Winston.

Today, the Panthers travel to CenturyLink Field in Seattle to take on the Seahawks and everyone is picking the Hawks to win.  Can’t say I blame ‘em.  You never know which Cam Newton is going to show up for a game—the one that mugs for the cameras or the one that realizes there are 10 other players on the offense.  Cam’s record against the Seahawks is pretty dismal and it’s fair to say the ruckus from “The 12th Man” will rattle him.

“The Beast” will play today after missing the last two games with a hammy injury.  With Lynch in the lineup, the Panthers’ defense is going to have its hands full.  That’s why the return of Pro Bowl middle linebacker Luke Kuechly will give the Panthers a much-need lift emotionally.

I’d like to think the Panthers could win today because Seattle has had such an uncharacteristically disappointing season.  If, however, you base your opinion of both teams on their recent history and not just the last five weeks the plane ride back to Charlotte could be a disappointing one if they let this game slip through their fingers.
GO PANTHERS!

Alabama Crimson Tide Vs Texas A&M Aggies

Kevin Sumlin, Head Coach of the Texas A&M Aggies, is looking to avenge their 59-0 annihilation at the hands of Alabama last year.  To that end the Aggies hired former LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis.  Hoo Lordy that worries me.

Kyle Field is where the matchup between the Aggies and the Tide will go down.  Kickoff is at 3:30 PM ET and airs on CBS.

I ain’t happy that Bama slipped in the AP Top 25 Poll from No. 8 to No. 10 this week despite their win over the Hogs.  A&M is ranked No. 9.  Earlier in the week Bama opened as a 3-point favorite.

The Tide defense ranks 5th nationally in overall yards per play and yards per rush allowed.  They rank 3rd nationally in overall efficiency and 2nd in defensive efficiency.  The Aggies need to play their best to have a prayer of beating Bama.

ATM had a bye week last week and should be well-rested for today’s game.  They utilize the hurry-up offense which has given Bama some fits this season.  They have home field advantage today, but honestly that advantage is suspect due to the fact that they are 5-7 at home since joining the SEC back in 2012.  In fact, their win against Miss State two Saturdays ago was their first one against a ranked opponent since they whipped Baylor in 2011.

ATM won’t win the game running the ball against the big boys of BAMA so they’re going to hang their hopes on the arm of QB Kyle Allen.
ROLL TIDE ROLL!

UPDATE:  The San Antonio Express-News reported that some punks at a Texas A&M frat house draped a banner over its living quarters which read “Kristen Saban’s Private Suite”.  She is the married daughter of Head Coach Nick Saban.

The paper is speculating that Coach Saban is probably not aware of the banner.  Don’t bet on it honey.  I was somewhat worried about the final outcome of the game.  Not anymore.

The gutless wonders who decided this was a good idea don’t have to take the field against the Tide.  Bama is going to tear the Aggies limb from limb over this.  Mark my words.

Green Bay Packers Vs St. Louis Rams

The Rams travel to Lambeau Field today to take on the 4-0 Packers.  Kickoff is at 1:00 PM ET and the game airs on CBS.

I read with amusement that Rams’ Head Coach Jeff Fisher scared the hell out of some of his players this week during practice when he brandished an airhorn to help his defense work on not being pulled offsides by Packers QB Aaron Rodgers’ hard count.

Rodgers is notorious for luring defenders into jumping offsides and then taking advantage of a “free play” to go deep and flummoxing the opposing team.  He is, in my opinion, the most skilled QB in the NFL.  (Don’t be a hater Brady fans)

The Rams are 2-2, but last Sunday they beat the undefeated Arizona Cardinals.  Their other win so far this season was against the Seattle Seahawks.

I believe Green Bay will emerge the winner today.  Here’s why:  The Rams own the league’s worst total offense per game record, the Packers have won 11 straight home games and Rodgers hasn’t thrown an interception at home in almost 3 years.

The Pack needs to stop rookie star Todd Gurley.  With a defensive line that is ranked third in the league for points allowed and yards allowed, you can check off that box.

I suspect Aaron Rodgers to take advantage of the fact that the Rams are missing Alec Ogletree, their leading tackler who suffered a broken ankle.

GO PACKERS!

And since no football post would be complete without pom-poms, here’s a photo of some enthusiastic Packers fans.  NOTE:  The Packers do not have cheerleaders so we make do.

Alabama Crimson Tide Vs Arkansas Razorbacks

Revenge is on the mind of the Arkansas Razorbacks after their 14-13 loss to the Crimson Tide last year in Fayetteville.  Bama is riding an eight game winning streak against the Hogs and has won five consecutive games against them on their home turf of Bryant-Denny Stadium; in fact, my beloved Tide owns the series with Arky 15-8.  The last time the Razorbacks won in Tuscaloosa was waaaaay back in 2003.

It’s Homecoming Week in Tuscaloosa and the Tide is 80-13-1 in homecoming games under Coach Saban.  The Tide moved up in the AP Top 25 Poll to No. 8 after its beat down of Jawja (that’s Georgia for you Yankees reading this) last week in the Rain Bowl.

Today’s game airs on ESPN at 7:00 PM ET.

Coach Saban implored Bama fans not to become arrogant after their dominating win, but I gotta tell ya it’s gonna be hard to curb my enthusiasm.  I’ve got my Alabama Barbecue Sauce ready and some tasty recipes for throttled hog:  bacon crusted spareribs, pork bacon rolls, barbecued pork chops, bacon stuffed pork roast, whiskey glazed smoked ham, tenderloin pan skewers, baby back bacon ribs, stuffed barbecue sausage and barbecued sausage sammichs.  Grab your napkins!

Alabama Crimson Tide Vs Georgia Bulldogs

The road to the SEC Championship begins in earnest today as my beloved Crimson Tide travels to Athens to do battle ‘tween the hedges against Georgia.  Bama is ranked No. 13 while the Dawgs are sitting at No. 8.  The game kicks off at 3:30 PM and will air on CBS.

Coach Saban is counting on strong performances from Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake and the improved throwing skills of QB Jake Coker.  On the other side of the ball, the Dawgs have standout QB Grayson Lambert and the dynamic running duo of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.

As good as Georgia’s offense has been so far this season they are facing a tenacious Bama defense.  They have great speed up and down the field and rarely make mistakes.  They will have to kick things up a notch against a disciplined Georgia offense.

Alabama hasn't played in Sanford Stadium since they buried the Bulldogs in their black jerseys (the now-famous “blackout” game) after running out to a 31-0 halftime lead and going on to totally destroy them 41-30 in 2008. Mark Richt was Georgia’s head coach at the time and must remember the sting of that loss.

Seth Emerson, who covers the Bulldogs for the Atlanta Journal Constitution tweeted back in August, “Georgia will not be wearing any alternative uniforms this year, per A.D. Greg McGarity. Stand down, Georgia fans.”

Given that “the blackout” failed, the braintrust at UGA has devised another method to pump up the Dawg Nation.  In advance of Saturday’s matchup, “Wear Red. Beat Bama” billboards were put up throughout the state.  Bama is in their heads big-time.

Bama leads the series between these two teams 37-25-4, but oddsmakers have the Tide as 2-and-a-half point underdogs for the first time in six years.

Bama’s senior defensive cornerback Cyrus Jones told Sports Illustrated on Monday, “The fact that we’re underdogs, I think it just gives us that much more motivation to go out there and just kind of reclaim our reputation and how we want to be viewed by the rest of the league and the rest of the country.

Freshman running back Bo Scarbrough is healthy again after tearing knee ligaments during spring ball and is eligible to play after missing four games due to an NCAA violation committed during his recruitment.

If Offensive Coordinator Lane Kiffin and Coach Saban decide to play Henry, Drake and Scarbrough at the same time it could open up Alabama’s offense and give the Dawgs’ defense fits.

Alabama’s dynasty has all but been called “dead” by the “experts”.  Go ahead ya’ll, keep telling yourself that.  Win this game and the loss to Ole Miss will be all but forgotten.

The forecast for today’s game is calling for staggering, soaking rains—might as well call it the Rain Bowl.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!

And since no football post would be complete with some pom-poms, feast your eyes on one of Alabama’s lovely Crimsonettes.

Carolina Panthers Vs New Orleans Saints

Thirteen months ago the Saints traveled to Bank of America Stadium to butt heads with the Carolina Panthers.  They handily defeated the Panthers 28-10 to end a 7-game losing streak.  A month later the Panthers, seeking to snap their 6-game losing streak, visited the Superdome.  The Saints dug a hole for themselves and wound up losing 41-10.

Saints fans will remember the melee in the first quarter of that game that was sparked by QB Cam Newton making an ass of himself with that damned “Superman” celebration I detest.

Saints QB Drew Brees has a shoulder injury.  If he doesn’t respond to treatment he will sit out today's game and Luke McCown, the guy who pitifully muses in a Verizon commercial, “I wonder why they save those back-ups and not just put them in the regular rotation.  I bet if they just had the chance some of those back-ups would really shine,.” will be under center.  It will be McCown’s first NFL start since 2011.

The Panthers are 2-0 and the Saints are 0-2.  While the absence of Brees could give the Cats a distinct advantage, if Newton plays like he’s the only player on the field, the Saints could force him to rethink his wonder jock mentality.  The Saints’ defense could punish Newton and stretch their winning record at BOA Stadium to 5-4.

The game will be carried on FOX and kickoff begins at 1:00 PM.

GO PANTHERS!

Alabama Crimson Tide Vs ULM Warhawks

Today my beloved Crimson Tide plays at home against the Warhawks of Louisiana-Monroe.  The game airs on the SEC Network at 4:00 PM ET.

After last week’s demoralizing defeat at the hands of the Ole Miss Rebels I, your humble Bama fan, note that the Tide took a precipitous plunge in the AP Top 25 Poll from No. 2 to No. 12, some nasty rumors about Offensive Coordinator Lane Kiffin were swirling this week (turns out it was an Internet hoax) and backup kicker Gunnar Raborn was suspended indefinitely after his arrest on Thursday for driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

I don’t want to be a “gloomy Gus”, but I hope these incidents are not portends if a dying Alabama dynasty.  There are far too many in college football who would love nothing better.

I was certain last week that Ole Miss would not win back-to-back victories against Bama.  Brother was I wrong.  This week ULM is undoubtedly looking to do the same thing.  Back in 2007, the Warhawks were at Bryant-Denny Stadium and won the game the Tide had squandered 21-14.

QB Jake Coker is going to be under center today and if he continues to look down his receivers, ULM’s defense is going to smother any chance at catching the ball.  I hope Kiffin stops thinking with his little head and starts thinking with his big head and works on Coker’s passing skills, otherwise the stories about Alabama’s dynasty dying will not be exaggerated.

The Warhawks are going into Bryant-Denny Stadium looking to pull off an upset.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!

And because no football post would be complete with pom-poms, check out this week’s pretty young thing.

Payback Time: Alabama Vs Ole Miss

Revenge is in the air tonight as No. 15 Ole Miss rolls into Bear Country.  No. 2 Alabama will take on the Rebels at Bryant-Denny Stadium at 9:15 PM.  The game will air on ESPN.

The Rebels came away with a 23-17 victory last year at home against a stunned Tide and the jubilant fans rushed onto the field of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium tearing down the goalposts and parading the pieces around The Grove and The Square in Oxford.

Ole Miss has never beaten Alabama in back-to-back seasons.  The only time Ole Miss beat Alabama at home was waaaaaaay back in 1988.  Wins over Alabama are far and few between.  One fan mused, “Our hearts are broken year after year.”

That shocking defeat caused jaws to flap endlessly amongst sports writers and pundits who questioned whether Alabama could win the SEC Championship.  They did recover.  After all the bowl games and playoffs had been played, the Tide wound up with two losses and the rest of the SEC teams had at least three.

The Crimson Tide’s defense is about to be tested in ways it hasn't been since the Sugar Bowl, and it’s offense won't need any extra motivation to play an Ole Miss team that beat them a year ago.

Last week the Rebels’ defensive back, Tee Shepard, was ejected for targeting against Fresno State and the SEC Office imposed a half-game suspension today.

The Crimson Tide had the most efficient run defense in the country last year and returned five starters in their front seven. In games against Wisconsin and Middle Tennessee State, Bama allowed opposing running backs a scant 91 yards in 38 carries.

Ole Miss beat Bama with a so-so run game last year, but trust me, that ain’t something you want to try twice.

Bama wins by a touchdown.

ROLL TIDE!
