Rest is not idleness, and to lie
sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur
of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a
waste of time.
Some of the best times of my life
were spent in reverie of the wonders God made for us like snorkeling in Chankanaab
Lagoon and watching the parrotfish nibbling on coral formations, walking along
the South Rim or the breathtaking helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon. My memories include the ascent to the peak of
Rothorn in the Bernese Highlands of Switzerland and trying my best to play an
alpenhorn at a restaurant situated on the mountain.
I am four agonizing months away
from retiring. As I look out my window,
I see the trees coming to life with neon-green buds where leaves will soon
be. In a few days the air will be filled
with the fragrance of Spring. The little
Carolina Wrens have been busy remodeling their nest inside the birdhouse just
outside my door and the grass is greening up after a long winter.
Retirement—that is when life will
truly begin and I can go anywhere I choose.
