Mayor Pete And God

South Bend, IN mayor and Democrat clown car occupant Pete Buttigieg doesn’t believe the Christian talking points that are taught in churches and Sunday schools fit in with the tenets of the Republican Party platform.

In church “I hear about taking care of the marginalized and defending the weak and supporting the poor and visiting the prisoner and welcoming the stranger and humility and decency.”

Buttigieg is quick to accuse evangelical Christians who support President Trump of hypocrisy.

“I’m reluctant to comment on another person’s faith, but I would say it is hard to look at this president’s actions and believe that they’re the actions of somebody who believes in God,” Buttigieg said, adding that Trump worships himself and never humbles himself before God.

He has feuded with Vice President Pence over the 2015 Religious Freedom Restoration Act he signed into law.  The Indiana law allowed businesses to use religious liberty as a defense if they believed government was burdening their exercise of religious beliefs in much the same way as the 2014 Supreme Court ruling favored Hobby Lobby.

Last month during a town hall on CNN, Buttigieg told the audience, "I get that one of the things about Scripture is different people see different things in it. But, at the very least we should be able to establish that God does not have a political party."

In an interview with NBC's Today Show this morning he said, “It’s important that we stop seeing religion used as a kind of cudgel, as if God belonged to a political party. And if he did, I can’t imagine it would be the one that sent the current president into the White House.”

Buttigieg has made clear throughout his presidential bid he believes Democrats should embrace religion and decry those who try to suggest God belongs to one political party or another.

I find this particularly rich considering the fact that on Day Two of the 2012 DNC Convention in Charlotte, NC God was stricken from their party platorm.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney said taking the word "God" out of the Democratic platform proved that the party was "veering further and further away into an extreme wing that Americans don't recognize."

The 2012 Republican platform mentioned God twelve times.

Romney’s needling forced the DNC to update the language to include mentioning "God", specifically the 2008 language saying "we need a government that stands up for the hopes, values and interests of working people and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential."

The embarrassing reversal was compounded by chaos and uncertainty on the convention floor. Three times then-Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the convention chairman, called for a voice vote on the changes and each time the yes and no votes seemed to balance each other out. On the third attempt, Villaraigosa ruled the amendments were approved — triggering boos from many in the audience.

Stringing The Pearls Of His Favor

The last Thursday in November is the one day that is exclusively American.  We commemorate a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621.

When their arduous existence was rewarded with a bountiful harvest after a year of sickness and scarcity, the Pilgrims gave thanks to God and celebrated His bounty with a joyous outpouring of gratitude.

Times change.  Traditions coalesce.  Their meaning becomes vague to younger generations of Americans.

In a time when aging veterans are told they cannot fly the flag under which they served or school children are told by their school board that there is no time in the day to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, upholding traditions like Thanksgiving may be at odds with our devotion to progressivism or secular self-interest.

If there is one day each year when food and family take center stage, it is Thanksgiving. It is a holiday about “going home” with all the emotional content those two words imply.

The need to connect with loved ones and to express our gratitude is at the heart of Thanksgiving and a nostalgia for a simpler time.  Somewhere in the hustle and bustle is the abiding national memory of a moment in Plymouth, nearly 400 years ago, when two very different cultures shared an autumn feast.

To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything He has given us—and He has given us everything. Every breath we draw is a gift of His love; every moment of existence is a grace.

I must admit, that this year more than any other in my 61 years of life, I have been stringing the pearls of His favor.

With the diagnosis that I have restrictive lung disease, I became depressed.  My depression was lifted when God brought me to my lung specialist.  I am not well, not cured, but I am in better health as a result of this very caring and compassionate medical professional.

From the miracle of heart catheterization, I have learned that my heart is healthy and not the source of my lung disease. 

From the government shutdown, when I was not being paid despite reporting for duty each day, I was able to liquidate some assets in order to stay afloat financially.

You find yourself praying in times of need.  You should also pray in the fullness of your joy and in your days of abundance.

This Thanksgiving I am thankful for the heavenly blessings which God has bestowed upon me.  I will recount the days filled with abundance, joy and gratitude.  I will kneel in prayer for all the gifts I have received and have yet to receive.

For my readers who have taken a moment from their busy day to leave their kind words and their heartfelt thoughts and prayers, I have been touched by your compassion.

God grants us a gift of 86,400 seconds a day.  You took a few of those precious seconds to think of me and wish me well.  I can never repay your kindness.

I have always loved A.A Milne’s children’s’ story about Winnie-the-Pooh.  It was Piglet who noticed “that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude.”

I will be thinking of you at Thanksgiving and asking God to bless you abundantly, love you dearly and watch over you always.

Dems: Government Must Be The Highest Power

God is nowhere to be found in the 2012 Democratic National Convention platform.

Apparently, the thought of God is unbearable.  In a marked change from its 2008 and prior platforms, the Democratic Party has removed the mention of God in its 2012 platform which ironically is titled "Moving America Forward." 

“We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values, and interests of working people, and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential.”

Now the words “God-given” have been removed. The paragraph has been restructured to say this:

“We gather to reclaim the basic bargain that built the largest middle class and the most prosperous nation on Earth—the simple principle that in America, hard work should pay off, responsibility should be rewarded, and each one of us should be able to go as far as our talent and drive take us.”

Andrew Green at Catholic Online opines:

“The Democratic platform does retain a rather muted reference to faith, stating that faith, though it does not mention faith in God, ‘has always been a central part of the American story, and it has been a driving force of progress and justice throughout our history.’  Apparently, the atheists would have like even this removed.” 

“The Democratic platform states that the election ‘is not simply a choice between two candidates or two political parties, but between two fundamentally different paths for our country and our families.’”

“That seems quite true, and it also seems that the path the Democratic Party has chosen is the path without God.” 

“This a curiosity indeed: how the Democratic party claims warrant to lead a "nation under God," and a nation whose foundational document refers to the ‘Laws of Nature and Nature's God,’ when the natural law and the name of God have become so abhorrent to it.”
